Casino Execs Call Gaming Bill Bad Idea

March 28th, 2011 Posted in Gaming Tags:

Chris Ciarlo

Channel 2 News

Wednesday, we told you about AB 258, a bill that would legalize online poker in Nevada.

Today, that bill was heard in committee at the legislature in Carson City.

If AB 258 does pass, it would be the first state to approve such legislation.

Before the bill even sees the floor, some casino execs are speaking out against it.

I think to do this the proper way, we should let the feds approve it first, said Venetian Casino lobbyist Robert Uithoven.

However, that is not as easy as it might seem. Despite Senator Harry Reids efforts, the federal government has turned down the idea a number of times.

Uithoven said legalizing online poker within Nevada would only move money around anyway, not generate more of it.

Then youre pulling Nevadans out of the brick and mortar casinos, which obviously, they wouldnt want to see, said Uithoven. Their revenues have already been down and theyve been hit hard by this recession.

Richard Perkins is a lobbyist for Pokerstars.net and disagrees. He said online poker would reach a completely different demo.

We would be reaching a completely different demographic here in that right now, its occurring and not being regulated or taxed by anybody, said Perkins.

So how much money is truly in the online gaming money pot? More than you might think.

It would generate $50 to $60 million a year in taxes and revenue would be generated, said Perkins. It would also have an impact of about $1.8 million on our state.

While both sides debate the issue, lawmakers arent betting on this bill getting approved.

Unless theres a change in the federal law, said Republican Senator Greg Brower. Its hard to imagine the bill being successful in this legislature.

Many Democrats we spoke with agreed, the bill doesnt have a great shot of passing.

Clark restores $15 million in gaming grants

March 25th, 2011 Posted in Gaming Tags:

Premier Christy Clark restored $15 million in gaming grants for BC charities Thursday but faced an attack by critics for not restoring all funding that was cut over the last two years.

Clark followed through on a promise she made during the Liberal leadership campaign to return some grant money cut by former premier Gordon Campbells administration.

But the new funds represent only about 42 per cent of the $36 million slashed from gaming grants since 2008, and none of the extra cash is available to adult arts, culture, sports and environmental groups that were previously shut out from government financial support.

The government spent $156 million on gaming grants in 2008-09. It allocated $120 million for 2011, but with the new money is set to spend $135 million.

The hands out for dollars are always greater than sometimes what we are able to provide, but

$15 million is a very good start, said Ida Chong, the minister of community, sport and cultural development tasked by Clark to manage gaming grants.

The Opposition NDP attacked the Liberals for the shortfall.

Its still $21 million short of where it was in 2008-09, said gaming critic Shane Simpson. Back when the cuts were made [Clark] called it a mistake. Shes continued to perpetrate that mistake by not restoring that money.

The government uses a small slice of more than

$1 billion in annual gambling and casino revenue to fund gaming grants for more than 6,000 non-profit groups, including literacy programs, minor sports teams, search-and-rescue organizations and youth-based arts, music and cultural groups.

It started slashing funding and changing eligibility rules to shut out certain groups, during the recession, sparking a fierce backlash. Clark has said the cuts, made by Campbells government, were a kick in the pants to community groups. She promised

$15 million during the Liberal leadership race, which she won on Feb. 26.

The money was only enough to earn Clark muted praise from charities Thursday.

The absolute flagrant exclusion of arts and culture is quite stunning, said Susan Marsden, president of the BC Association for Charitable Gaming.

[Clark] fulfilled her campaign promise, which is great, she infused some money which is definitely going to save some charities from extinction.

I am, however, completely befuddled as to why an additional $21 million couldnt be found.

Ian Case, general manager of Intrepid Theatre in Victoria, which runs the Fringe Theatre Festival, said any new grant money is good news but theres still a long way to go to reach proper funding. Everyone recognizes the economy has been crap and its going to take time to rebuild, but this is a good first step, he said.

Eligibility criteria for charities, as well as overall funding, will be reviewed as part of a future commission exploring the issue of gaming grants, said Chong. The commission, to be headed by a retired judge, does not yet have a start date.

Meanwhile, the $15 million will mainly restore funding for 500 organizations, such as service groups, festivals and museums, youth arts-and-culture groups and parent support services. An exact list was not available, and all organizations wont be notified until the end of this month, said Chong.

Transition houses, food banks and drop-in centres will get a 25 per cent increase, Chongs ministry said. Parent advisory groups will see an extra 25 per cent per elementary and secondary student for extracurricular sports and music programs. As well, there will be $25 per child to cover registration fees for scouts and cadets.

The only new organization to get funding is the BC Seniors Games Society, which receives $300,000 to help support seniors participation in annual regional sports competitions.

URL Hunter Brings Browser Gaming to the Address Bar

March 23rd, 2011 Posted in Gaming Tags:

Youve played plenty of videogames in your web browser, but what about in your browsers address bar?

In the current age, gaming in a web browser is kind of a big thing. Millions upon millions of people play browser-based games on websites like Facebook and Kongregate on a daily basis. A new browser game made by Corey from Probably Interactive throws a wrench into the works by taking gameplay out of the main window, and into the address bar.

Coreys URL Hunter is played up at the top of the browser where users typically type in their web destinations. You play as an O that must consume as many a letters as possible in 30 seconds.

Players move the O back and forth and press the spacebar when above an a to capture it. Meanwhile, the a letters move back and forth on their own as time ticks down.

The game works through the use of HTML5s History features. If you hit back after the game is over, youll notice that the text in the address bar will replay your previous moves. URL Hunter probably isnt going to keep you entertained for much more than a minute, but its a good example what can be done with some creative programming.
